Hey guys. I don't want to sound stupid but, I was reading the most recent Tractorhouse magazine and on the front page was 2 CaseIH MX series tractors. One was a 210 and the other a 285 I think. Anyway it said under the picture in the description that they had 3 PTO'S. At first I thought they had a misprint and meant 3 remotes but it was under two tractors. So I kept looking through the magazine trying to find more but I couldn't. Have I gotten into older tractors lately too much(if that is possible) and lost touch with new technology. I guess my question is: Do new tractors have 3 PTO'S now? or was it a misprint? I have lived on a farm all of my life and never heard such a thing. Again please forgive the stupidness!:)

Mark: I don't have the answer, but also wouldn't be surprised if what your reading is correct. Lets face it IH came with twin shaft 540 and 1000 PTO back in 1963. Massey had 540 as well as ground drive PTO by the mid 60s, one shaft but two different gears so to speak.

I've seen European built tractors with 3 point hitches on each end and PTO on rear, side and front, and I suspect they were both 540 and 1000 RPM. I hauled two of them for a friend in 1978. It wouldn't surprise me if CaseIH finally decided they must catch up on technology.

Yes this one has 3 different PTOs. But they do not all stick out the back at once.

You have to loosen a couple of bolts and change the shaft.Similiar to the way JD has done it for years.

It came with a 540 shaft, a 1000 and a large diameter 1000.

Newer large capacity choppers and other equipment require the large 1000 shaft.

I don"t have any equipment to use the large 1000 but the shaft came with it.

Gary: I take it horsepower has now out stripped the capabilities of the standard size 1000 rpm shaft.

Takes me back to first day with 1066 running a 540 NH S-770. The operator called me on radio, and said, " this isn't going to last too long, tach is holding steady, but the harveser is slowing down." I didn't even check it out, called the NH dealer, said, "I submit deliver that 890". I told the operator to take it easy until he got there. No point in destroying a good 770 or the tractor PTO.

Smoked the slipper clutch, eh?

I was thinking maybe they meant the tractor had a front pto and two shafts facing rear, but now I realize they don't do that dual-shaft thing much anymore...

So what happens if somebody buys one of those choppers with the large PTO and they don't have a tractor that has 3 PTO'S? Do they make an adapter to fit over the stock shaft? Another question is: Why do alot 1466's and 1566's only have 1000 PTO? My brother was looking at several 1466's but they most only have 1000 PTO ended up buying a 1256.

Those tractors were available from the factory with either a 1000 RPM PTO or no PTO. All of the 14 series tractors ordered at the dealership I worked at were ordered new without PTO and a PTO kit for a 1066 of 1086 was ordered through whole goods then installed at the dealership before delivery to the customer.

Mark: If you ever check into the specs on do's and don'ts on 66 series tractors, they tell you not to use 540 rpm PTO for applications over 100 hp. If you read my responce to Gary below, my operator firmly believed it was 1066 PTO slipping and not the 770 forage harvester slip clutch.

Not many folks remember this one either, "IH also warned operators not to use 1066 and 1466, equipped with duals, for maximum drawbar pull in the 3 lowest gears."
