I just got this tractor and wanted to know the specs for changing all of the oils. The transmission oil looks like a 30weight with no additives. The motor oil I can see and tell what needs to be in it( SAE30). I am unsure of the transmission oil and how much it holds. Is this the only two locations for oil.

Are there any other suggestions for what I may need to do before using the Model M on the ranch. I plan to work it mowing and digging post holes ect.

Thanks

The engine should take the common 10-40 auto oil, not 30wt. New oils are so much better than straight wt that they are best.
30wt , or 2o wt in the hydraulic system is non-detergent, but they really do not care what is in them (thin hydraulic oils of today may not generate as much pressure.
The trans is drained in two plugs in the bottom rear. 80W-90 transmission oil is correctThe level plug is on the left more or less on the side under your clutch foot.
I recommend getting a manual, owners, and repair. JimN

The trans/diff takes 13 gallons of 90 weight gear lube. The belt pulley takes lube. The steering box takes lube. All kinds of places on the tractor need lubrication if you want to take care of it.

Yes, here is another suggestion: Buy a Farmall M Operator's Manual. It has an entire section on oil and lubrication , including frequency, which will be of great help in caring for the tractor and keeping it from wearing prematurely. It will also teach you a lot about your tractor.

Use 80-90 Gear Lube in the Transmission and 30wt in the engine, or 10w40 will work in the engine. The steering sector gear is lubricated with oil and should also be checked. The belt pulley housing (if your has a pulley) holds oil too. I don't have a M manual to tell you how much, you should buy a manual.

Andy.

The steering gear housing's seals are probably shot. If you add oil it will probably just leak out and make a huge mess.

It's true that it should have gear lube in it, but most have packed them with axle grease due to the difficulty in keeping the gearbox sealed.
