Tractor serial numbers

I have a Farmall M and the serial number begins with FBK291.
The engine serial number begins with FBKM278.
Should these numbers match to be original?
Should I use the engine number when ordering engine parts ?

Most times the engine serial # for a M tractor in your serial # range will be a even 13000 less than the tractor serial #. Use the engine serial # for engine parts, example at M engine serial # 278050 IH started installing the same crankshaft
that they used in the SM.
Your engine is original or in the original serial # range since you didn"t post the whole #.

Thanks for your quick reply. What was the original piston dia. size for this engine serial number range?
3 7/8 or 4 inch?

M's had a 3 7/8" bore; Super M's, SMTA's and 400's had a 4" bore. mike

As red mist said 3-7/8 original, probably overhauled and 4 inch pistons and sleeves installed sometime in the tractors life.
