I was browsing the Engine diagrams and I saw the hand crank handle. I've never had to and crank mine so just out of curiosity, I was wondering just how difficult it was. At least in comparision to a C or even an M. I just can't imagine someone hand craking these engines.
Has anyone had the unfortunate experience with this?

i have a w-9 that has a hand crank. i tried it a couple times. i think farmers back then musta been a lot huskier.

I used to hand crank a TD-6 and it was easy. However, most tractors that are hand cranked are equipped with a magneto with a impluse coupling (as did the TD-6). I believe it would be very difficult to hand crank a 460 (or any other tractor) without a mabneto, plus the tractor would have to have a hot battery to provide spark. Don't try it as you might end up with a broken arm.

Those hand cranks where made for those way back then that knew what a true day of work was. Now days with all the sit down jobs 95% of people could not begin to hand crank any thing. But yes it could be done and those that did also ended up with broken arms from time to time

Ctry Boy: I had several young lads working on the farm back when my 560 diesel was new, and it did have the same type crank as your 460. Of course with the diesel it was only used for turning engine for timing etc.

One of these young lads was not very mechanically inclined, but he was quite rugged physically. His co-workers chalanged him to crank start the 560 diesel. He did surprise them how well he turned it over, surprised me too. Problem was they never told him about the glow plugs, or even offered to hold them on for him. 560 never did start on crank, but he did try for about 10 min.

Whether it has a mag or battery and coil makes no difference. I hand crank a couple distributor models all the time.

I have hand cranked Farmall H's and Massy 30's.
Never broke anything.

Just park them on the barn bridge, a lot easier to start that way !

Thats cruel, yet funny. I'm not sure I should laugh or feel pitty, Hugh!

No doubt muscle/mass is beneficial in crank starting a tractor, but knowing the right technique is even more valuable. Ever seen a 125 pound Harley Davidson "tough guy" kick start one of those big 'ole Harleys? They get 'er done!

Ctry Boy: I did laugh, this same bunch of young lads spear headed by our cranking friend, once filled my pipe with dead house flies. The pipe was close to empty, thus they removed the ball of tobacco and ash, put the dead flies on bottom then packed the tobacco and ash on top. All this happened in cab of my pickup while I was talking with another farmer.

Course it kind of backfired on them, upon returning to truck I remembered the pipe was empty, thus I beat it out on the rear view mirror, without even looking. As I started to fill it with fresh tobacco, one of the guys said,"I told you guys we should have put fresh tobacco on top of the flies, then told him what great guys we were filling his pipe for him." That might have fooled me. The reason it may have fooled me is they always gave me a hard time about my driving while filling the pipe.
