Gonna Start Baling with an IH No. 46

Very new to the haying industry. I recently bought an IH No. 46 baler. It hasn't been run in some time but has been kept inside. It's not rusted out and I saw it run. The auger seemed to run ok, but would skip a beat every now and then. Maybe the belt could be changed? I'd like to start haying with it ASAP, any suggestions on an overall maintanence check??

Get a manual and make sure the knotters are clean and adjusted to specs. Also the twineknives need to be sharp. If the knotters are kept up, they will do a good job of baling. Also, buy the best twine you can find, not the el-cheep-o stuff, and NOT plastic.

If you're not a mechanic now, you will be before you're done. That comment is based on a 45. A 46 may be an improvement. As mentioned, keep twine knives sharp and buy good sisal twine. When tying troubles arrive, get a second person to turn the flywheel manually through the tying cycle. Sure helps to see what it's doing in slow motion.

I would like to have a nickle for every bale I re-tied by hand as it was coming out/off the chute. We maid small bales, and all I would do is lean my body into the bale on the end chute and re-tie it. Very seldom would we have stop the baler. The few I missed would be tossed into the next wind row.

Never used a 46, and I am told that the 46 is much better than the 45. My dad had a 45, and my job was to ride the twine box (they were mounted on the sides of the bale chamber), and tie the missed bales before they came out. I spent many a hour on that baler. They should have built a seat on the baler, and just done away with the knotters. As I said, most agree the 46 are decent balers. I have never talked to anyone who used a 45 that liked them.

In my younger days I too spent many hours on the twine box. The closest balor was a NH with a 2 cyl Wis. Don't know which was worse trying to start a hot Wisconsin or tying loose bales. The good old days!

Ron, I baled about 300,000 bales with a 45, and there is no difference in the knotters between a 45 and 46 they are identical. Either one was a good baler for their time. Chuck

I had a 46 baler years ago. It always missed more bales than it tied. I had several IH mechanics work on it, never helped much. My advice is to scrap it and get a NH or JD baler, they both have the same knoters and they work soooo much better than IH 46.
