1940 Farmall H PTO shaft oil seal

I can't figure how to replace the PTO shaft oil seal short of drilling and ripping it out in pieces. Does anyone know an easier way? It's the old style PTO used in the first H tractors. Thanks

I don't remember exactly, but I think I pulled the entire assembly out of the tractor. It isn't that big a deal, just park a 5 gallon bucket under it and have at it.

Park the front end downhill so the rear end lube won't run out and then remove the entire pto. Buy a new gasket at the same time as you get the seal.
If you put a 3' pipe on the end of the pto shaft when re-assembling it is much easier to guide back into place.

I just did that a while back on my 47 H. I had photos but lost them all on Epson. I just removed the cap and took a small punch and lightly drove one side of the seal in and the other side popped out so I could grab it with some pliers. Hope this helps. Mine never leaked till it did. Then it leaked everywhere in one night.

I'm not sure what some of these guys are replacing but..YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REMOVE THE PTO to replace the seal, I've done both my H's, parked downhill, pick out the old seal, install the new one and you are on your way

You got it Mike. Dad and I did the Super H parked on a hill without taking out the PTO unit...

It really doesn't matter if you ruin the old seal, you're replacing it!
