IH #60 plow

I am going to look at one of these plows tomorrow night. It is a 4X14 trail with new points, almost new coulters and looks from pictures to be in good condition. The price is $400. Is this a fair price? Are these good plows?
Thanks in advance
Ken

I paid way more than that for mine, and it was only a 3x14, no coulters, and the points were shot... Yours sounds like a great deal, unless the plow frame has been bent.

The difference is you don't see too many #60 plows around here. Most farmers plowed with their #8 Little Geniuses until about 1963 when they went out and bought a spanking new 706 or 806 and a semi-mounted plow. Very few #60s and #70s were sold around here because we've got nasty hard variable ground and the heavier semi-mount plows work more consistently.

Does it have Super Chief or Plow Chief bottoms? The Plow Chief has the separate cast point. You can still get shares, moldboards and points for the Plow Chief, but they are not as common.

I've got a 4-14 #60 with the Plow Chief bottoms, paid $125 with the cylinder, but the bottoms needed work. One nice feature is that you can drop the 4th bottom and use it as a 3-bottom, if needed. Get the operator's book (check ebay) for setup.

Ken: If that plow has Plow Chief bottoms, run as fast as you can in other direstion. Plow Chief are the ones with separate point and share. I bought a new one in 1962, and one had to buy 3 extra points, they wont stay tight. Counting the ones you loose it take 7 points to run a 4 bottom plow.

If it has Super Chief bottoms, one piece point-share, it should be a good buy. I had two of those great plows.

Thats is a pretty good deal. I saw a three bottom #60 sell in SE MN for almost a thousand dollars. Your getting that one pretty cheap for the price of $400.
