Pics- Super-A drum and brakeband

I wondered why my brakes weren't grabbing...

...but my reason for this post is to ask about the health of this drum, which is considerably thicker to the upper right compared to the lower left. Still usable?

If it's bad, anybody know a source for a replacement? My IH dealer says they can't be had anymore, and were $260+ !!

I was surprised at the amount of oil on the drum and brakeband, considering there is a weep hole. They were saturated!

That looks just like mine when i tore it down. You can have it turned or you can hit it with some Emery cloth and put it back together. These things dont go 50 mph. It will stop fine one way or the other.

I wouldn't be too worried about the uneven wall thickness of the drum. Probably been like that from new, except for some wear. Machining of surface and bore of the cast drum was not always done very accurately.

Fix the leak, new linings light sanding of the drum surface non directional to break glaze, clean with Brake Kleen or similar and off you go. The core shifted when Cast and poses no issue with a low speed machine. Do not pull it down the road 60 MPH and all is well. JimN

Hi Pete,

It sounds like everyone has already given you good advice, clean it up and put her back together!

We're taking a little break on our SA project, we got real close to having it run for my son's senior project presentation, but we just flat ran out of time. Apparently it didn't matter; he got a 100% value from all four judges. He was the only senior to do so.

After that, graduation hit and this weekend is the "Best Show on Tracks" here in Woodland California. It's being talked up as the biggest show in the US ever. Tractors are coming from overseas! We'll be taking two tractors from our collection.

We'll get back on the SA after my wallet recovers for over use! Greg
