1942 h with new engine kit in it, and overhauled head.. also rebuilt carb from Bates but it wont run smooth and it puts out black smoke, its running rich, the float is set right any other ideas what it might be.i think i need another carb.

You have too much fuel going to the engine, but I am sure you knew that. If you have done the carburetor adjustment properly, you may have the wrong (too big) jet in the carb.

Markred Mine was doing that after cleaning and overhauling the carb. Couldn"t get itd straightened out so I bought anothere carb, overhauled it, ran the same way. It was icing up in the intake. Does your intake feel cold when tractor is running? Add a couple cans of heat to the tank and try again. Helped Mine. Bernie Steffen

Float level is 1 27/32 from bottom of float to top of gasket. Turn main adjustment screw in until it misses, out until smooth. What was wrong with your old carb? They can be rebuilt forever unless broken or cracked.

Did you try adjusting float so it lets less gas go out to engine. Forget about book settings and try to set it a little less. Ive did this a few times and it made a difference.

You may want to test the float to see if it has a leak in it. If the float fills with fuel, it won't matter what you set it at, it will always run fat.

Have you contacted Bates? If they rebuilt the carb, they should guarantee it to function properly. Of course, if you have already taken the carb apart, you may have voided the guarantee.

Adjust (increase) your closed position float level setting a little (less than 1/8") so that the needle closes on the seat a little earlier and slightly lowers the fuel level in the bowl. I have run into this same problem two or three times - perhaps more so when aftermarket components are used. Or, maybe the float sits a tiny bit lower in today's fuel? Regardless, this cure works consistently well for me. mike

Seems like everyone wants you to adjust the float setting. I'll double guarantee you that if the carburetor does not perform as expected with the float set to factory specs, changing that setting to one of your own design WILL NOT work either. If the carb floods over, or runs rich, it ain't the float setting IF it is set at factory specs.

Of course Rusty is right - as long as you believe every carb and float IH ever manufactured was absolutely perfect.....
Personally, I've run across a few that are not. It ain't rocket science to be a letter series Farmall carb expert; these are about the simplest carbs in the world..... If it is perpetually flooding, the needle is not closing against the seat. That is controlled by the float. Need I argue the point more....? Some just don't quite fit the factory specs.
