OT: selling on e-bay

Has anyone ever had any luck selling on e-bay? It has been mind-boggling! I have been trying to sell a parts tractor so I figured why not try e-bay? (Item number: 170229391314) Read my disclaimer. Has anyone else had this problem? (Dealing with people who can"t understand)...or is it just me?

I havent looked at your item but Im glad you brought this up. I used to sell a lot on ebay and only had one bad experience from a bad buyer.
But here is what I know.
Ebay likes to say that a bid is a binding contract. A bid on ebay is NOT A BINDING CONTRACT. And heres why. AS LONG AS EBAY PERMITS THE SELLER TO REMOVE THE ITEM FROM BID BECAUSE IT SOLD LOCALLY THERE NEVER IS A TRUE "MEETING OF THE MINDS" BETWEEN SELLER AND BIDDER. Legally speaking in order to have a true contract you must have a meeting of the minds between the two parties. Knowing the item you are bidding on can be removed at any time does not meet the criteria of meeting of the minds. IF EBAY STOPPED ALLOWING SELLERS TO REMOVE AN ITEM FROM BID THEN IT COULD BE SAID THAT A BID IS LEGALLY BINDING.
Now, with that said I still think ebay can be a good source for both seller and buyer if you go into it knowing that it can go bad at any time.
The idea of ebay is a good one. But like everything else on the planet it is only as good as the people involved.
One other thing in reverence to Hugh.
Whether to start a bid at .99 or the price you want to get for it is a toss up.
If you want to take a chance that high bidders will be looking at ebay that week then start at .99 and make it a true auction.
But, it you don"t want to take a chance on selling too low then start the bid at your minimum price. It"s just a toss up, like everthing else.

I did look at your item and I cant relate what you said in your post to your auction.
You werent trying to bring attention to your auction were you? :)

By the way, I would not pay that much for a project. I think you should be happy you got a bid.

I got taken for $740 about 3 years ago on ebay. The guy I sent the money to was in Florida and I was here in KY. I contacted the local Police in Tampa and they refused to take a report, so I called KY state police and filled a report with them being that part of the transaction occured in my state. The Case Title on the UOR was Theft By Deception O/$300 which is a felony. I then took the police report to the county attorney whome assured me they would contact me within a few days and give me a follow up. It has been 3 years and I am still waiting for that call.

I also called FBI internet crimes and left a message to which they never replied, and I called the State Attorney General and they didn't do anything either. I was trying to stop this guy from screwing everyone, because he was very convincing and clearly a professional con man. We even talked on the phone before I sent the money, so I had all the information on him, I completed a background on him and had his address and all and still no help from anyone.

I guess what I am trying to say is watch your back on Ebay, always check feedback and if there is any doubt about their credibility or if something is too good to be true, don't bid. I understand to the court system that $740 isn't that much, but at the time it was a lot to me.

LOL

First I will say I got irritated and left a disclaimer that I probably shouldn"t have. After careful thought I removed it. I even contacted the moderator of this forum to get this post removed. My point is that people don"t seem to be able to read what is posted in the ads, even though you put it there in black and white. I was commenting along those lines.

Lastly, I was just venting. People don"t need to bother with looking at that auction, my point was that I don"t understand some people in this world. I don"t normally sell things, and when I try people act all funny. This post was just a vent.

I tried selling on e-bay years ago, and it seemed different. After a long absence, I started again, but people seem different. It is like a "Rip Van Winkle" thing.

Is this the same tractor that is listed for sale on this site? If it is, I would have pulled the ad from this site while trying to sell on ebay. Then if the ebay auction did not sell you could allways relist it here. Someone wanting to buy could see it listed on both sites at the same time and may question which sale would you go through with? Things are getting harder to sell everywhere due to high fuel cost, distance between seller and buyer, shipping cost, etc. If the tractor is in decent condition you might do well by parting it out in peices.
Is this the same tractor ?

You say people don't understand, what don't they understand. you, like half the sellers on Ebay do not explain enough about the item for me to invest $2K in the item. You say the crank turns, that tells someone nothing, does it move pistons up and down, does it have any comression? What kind of shape is the engine in, any cracks, breaks or anything. Is tranny in good shape, steering tight or loose. I seen this ad, and cruised right over it, there was not enough info for me to even watch the auction. If you are going to sell on Ebay, you need to know the particulars on the product you are selling and let all potential buyers know all the info you can find or know about it. In my opinion, you are a little high for a non-running, non-restored tractor with used tires. But, that is my opinion.
Ya also got to take in consideration, it could cost someone another 4-600 dollars to come get it and if you want to sell it, you need to consider that, also.

It dont run and has the wrong front rims and tires so what else is wrong you dont have any7 close-up pics to realy see whats there and whats not and your price is too high for a non-runner that needs too many parts even with the bad pics.

my thoughts. ebay is an auction selling service built for wordwide activity. whereas your local auction service is built around a local area. your local auctioner is suppose to be a professional and usually starts bids on items based on previous sales. and how many times have they started at a price but then had to change it to a lower bid to get started yet most of the time ending close to where they started. so on ebay before you listed your tractor you should of monitored and catch some idea of what they are selling for. i do ebay a lot and don"t believe i have ever seen a not-running sav sell for your asking price. there is always at least 20 to 30 people actioning off tractors with the starting bid or buy it now price over what they normally sell for. case in point was a couple of weeks ago someone started a super c for like $7000 when there was at least 4 others starting around the $800 range and i do believe non of the 4 sold over $1200. so the person selling the $7000 just wasted what ever fee"s ebay taxes you. ask yourself this question; why do i go to autions for? for me its to get what i need or want at a bargin price and i always hope for nobody bidding on the same thing so i get it for a dollar? never happens but that why an auction is called an auction.

By the looks of most of the replies to this thread, you had another episode right here!

Frankly, I've given up trying. People as a general rule simply don't take the time to read and understand before opening their mouths...

Q: "My Super A isn't charging. I want to fix it and I absolutely, positively want to keep it stock 6 Volt. Please don't tell me to convert it to 12 Volt. What do I do?"

A1: "Well I remember back in 1942 I was a just a boy of 9 and I had a kitten by the name of Mittens..."
A2: "Convert it to 12V."
A3: "I had a Super A once. Nice tractor."
A4: "Convert it to 12V."
A5: "Go to farmallcub.com"
A6: "Convert it to 12V."

Point taken guys. First of all..parts tractor says it all. How many of you guys compression test a parts tractor when you walk up to it? I had a guy bring this here and unload it. That is the extent of it. I bought it for parts. Also I would mention that I am not stupid and I know what tractors--non-running parts tractor bring and what all could be wrong with them. This is no different that a fence row tractor. I would also mention that the ones who are interested ask questions. If no one asks, then that is okay. The ad is a "buy it now" OR BEST OFFER, which means if you disagree, make an offer. That is how this works. Best offers usually go back and forth and buyers and sellers agree on a price. I am not worried if she don"t sell...then she just sits her a while longer. Ebay charges by the picture, so I don"t get carried away with pictures. I have bought many tractors just by looking at them. I know odds are you might get a lemon, but to me the fun part is making lemonade. I fully admitted that I should not have made this post. I asked the moderator to remove it and they haven"t. I appreciate the feedback.

Amen....makes me feel more and more like Rip Van Winkle as the days go on...I think people like to criticize more than anything to make themseleves feel better.

Ebay is still a good place for buyers and sellers to meet, but there are some changes that I think would help. Nothing busts my chops more than pulling something up on ebay and getting: starting bid 200 bucks, current bid $1395, buy it now $1500, reserve not met, 3 bids, 5 days 10hrs left. Now come on. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out whats going on. If you were the current winning bidder and you were 105 dollars away from owning something you wanted that you were already spending 1395 dollars to get, why on earth would you not click the buy it now button and have it over with. Unless of course you and the seller were in cohoots and you were just helping run up the bid......that wouldn't happen, would it?

Unless of course you and the seller were in cohoots and you were just helping run up the bid......that wouldn't happen, would it?

And the new policy of hiding the bidders real user names on auctions is making that even easier to do.
