i have a 1948 farmall H i am restoring and i am taking the old engine out. where do i start? what bolts do i take out?

I am having a senior moment and cannot remember his name at the moment...but a member of this list has extensive photos... seems as if it is neblanc--the screen name.

1. take off sheet metal and fuel tank including sheet metal around radiator.
2. disconnect stearing at universal joint.
3. take cap off end of steering unit up front and screw out stearing shaft.
4. take off radiator.
5. Get some blocks under the transmission and jack up so that front wheels about 1/2 inch off floor and block off solidly. (keeping in mind that it is intent to suspend front end from support at transmission)
6. Get a hoist or something and attach to bloister. remove bolts from rail and take out the front wheel assembly. too heavy to handle solo. need lift.
7. take off rails
8. attach lift to engine.
9. remove bolts on the outside that mount engine to transmission
10. remove starter
11 Remove bolt inside the starter hole
12. engine should be free

be careful...some heavy pieces shere.

good luck

IH Service and Operator's Manuals are readily available for this tractor. See the top of the left hand column on this page, web search for binder books, and I&T manuals can be found just about anyplace that has tractor parts.

Like Tom says, there are some very heavy parts. Do not give them any chance to roll around and fall on you.

Joe,
I am restoring a 47 H and I appreciate the answers you received. I don't think I will have to break mine in two but would like to pull that front piece out since the cranking (hand) seems to be frozen. So far I have put in rings & bearings and replaced lights and done some painting. Am working on pulling hydraulic pump now. I am in Northern California (Santa Rosa). We are probably facing the same problems

Squirt you some oil on the cranking shaft and tap it with a hammer. Try to rotate it as you tap it. I have done this to free a couple up without much work. If you take the front end off you will have to do the same thing.

Thanks Randy for stepping up. I just could not remember your name. By the way, when you are finished, i think you should copyright and publish your photos--for cash!! :) They are very helpful.

Hey Tom, I can't believe I missed you at RPRU. I was manning the camera by the cow and still have your name tag, thought you were a no show until someone said you had been there.
I sure wanted to share our H stories

Just Curious, what did you have to do to make those dot head bolts. There were a lot of bolts on the h and m that got pretty rusty and hard to find replacements that are good and original. I would like to make my own dot heads. How do I go about making them. Thanks

My neighbor has a metal lathe and I just set the stop to get get the right size dot and took just enough off the head to make a dot. It was pretty easy once I got the lathe set up.
