Farmall M wide front question.

I recently purchased a Farmall M narrow front tractor. I purchased a good used original wide front end to put on the tractor to make it just like the one I grew up on. Our Farmall M, when I was a kid, had a factory wide front that was directly under the radiator. I have since seen several M"s with factory wide fronts that stuck out in front of the radiator like they were just mounted farther forward. Can any of you Farmall guys explain this to me and why the difference? Thanks for any response!

Jim R. the early wide fronts (with the tie rods in front of the axle) when mounted with a approximate 2'x2' adapter plate would place the axle under the radiator. If the plate was not installed the axle would be ahead of the bolster. Does that answer your question? Dick

I think the forward mount was to allow front mounted cultivators, but I have only seen pictures.

Why was the adapter plate installed? What was the advantage or disadvantage of mounting it one way or the other. Now I"m not sure I have all the parts to mount the wide front up under the radiator if I need an adapter plate.

I don't know about cultivators but I do know that sugar beet harvesters required the front end way out forward to allow all the harvestor to be mounted under the tractor. Dick

JIM R, IF YOU USE THE ADAPTER PLATE, DRILL/MACHINE ACCESS HOLES IN THE PLATE SO YOU CAN GET TO THE RADIATOR BOLTS. I JUST DID MINE. SCOTT

With the front-end mounted in the forward position, the tractor will turn about as sharply as an aircraft carrier.

I picked up a nice front end for my M, but ended up buying a second used (abused) front end that had the plate and braces so I could bolt up mine properly.

Thanks for all your responses! I finally got a chance to figure out the front end situation with everyones help. It turns out that the wide front that I bought has the adapter plate with it, which I won"t use, as I want to mount the front end directly under the radiator. I am assuming though that I will still need to drill two holes in the frame to mount the braces to, is that correct? I also assume that I should still use the braces even though the front end isn"t mounted using the adapter plate, is that correct? Thanks again for all your help!
