Farmall H charging?

I recently installed a new generator on a Farmall H. The owner had installed an 8 volt battery shortly before and installed it as negative ground. I don"t know what"s on it for a regulator. I installed the generator without noticing about the battery. After I polarised it I checked the voltage of the battery 8.15 with the tractor off and 8.5 running. Also the ammeter doesn"t work. Should I be concerned about the reverse polarity or just take it as working and leave it how it is? Many thanks, Sam

It is charging some, It seams to be OK. If it maintains the Battery with your starting, frequency, Leave it alone..
The gauge may just need to be replaced. If it were "open" it would not charge. JimN

Whether or not an old 6 volt system will charge an 8 volt battery DEPENDS on the VR it has (and if it can be tweaked). Generally if its a 2 wire Cutout Relay it can charge at 8 volts no mods needed. Im like Jim if it raises the battery voltage from its normal 8.4 volts to over that when shes at RPM Id just live with it a while. Make sure the belt is good n tight and if its a 3 brush genny Id adjust it for max charge.

Thanks all, I'll leave it as is as it seems to be charging some and I'll see how it goes. I might swap in a less than brilliant but functional ammeter from something of mine so the guy can keep an eye on what's happening. I just couldn't remember if regulators cared about pos or neg ground. Sam
