400 Axle housing

I have a Farmall 400 Diesel. The right rear wheel bearing went bad and split the axle housing. I've removed the wheel. Can the housing be slid off the axle without removing the axle? The book says that to remove the axle, I need to remove the operators platform to access a bolt at the inner end of the axle. My neighbor says I can access it by removing the PTO assembly. What's my best bet?

Your neighbor is correct.

Wedge the bull Gear up at its current height to allow easy reassambly. The gear will fall if you do not do it. I would use tapered hardwood shims and tap them into place. JimN

Can the housing be removed without pulling the axle

No. The inner bearing is retained into the housing with four bolts. You would have to get those bolts out but they are behind the bull gear. You would need to get the bull gear off the axle to gain access to them. Once you have the bull gear off the axle will already be most of the way off the bearing.

With the outer bearing cap off, remove the PTO. Remove the bolt that holds the bull gear on the axle. Remove the washer and reinstall the bolt. Put a spacer between the axle bolts and back the bolt back out again. As you back out the bolt it will push the axle out of the bull gear and bearing.
