I have a question about 6 volt battery. My dad has a H that still setup on the 6 volt system. The batteries keep going bad. We have everything hooked up right. We even disconect the cables after we use it. This time the battery is not even a month old, and he hooked the charger up to make sure the battery had a good charge and is showing a bad cell. Does anyone know what might be causing this problem? besides just bad batteries.

I've had the same results with 6 volt batteries from NAPA. Don't know what there problem is, because everything else I buy from them is always top-notch. I finally gave up and bought a battery at the local farm store. So far, after 6 months, it is still hanging in there.

Yeah, this has been going on for years. He uses the same auto supply becuase they pro rate the battery.

I would try a different make of battery. Converting to 12 volts will give you a better choice of batteries. Back in the early 1950's everything had 6 volts and you had a good choice of batteries. Willard was big name back then and
you got good service from them. I think they were sold. My first 12 volt car was a 1957 Chevy. Hal

Have you taken a gravity reading of the cells. Ive been using 6v batts in tractors for50pluss yrs and haven had anything like you describe.

No Sir, I am not sure what you are talking about? I was hoping that someone would be able to say we just need to replace a part or something simple that we have overlooked.

A specific gravety reading tests the state of charge by meas.uring the amount of sulfuric acid in the electrolyte. It is heavier than H2O and is easily measured with a cheap little baster type bulb and tube device with balls in it. The balls are different weight and float or sink. This is an easy way check cell quality, (against one another, and state of charge. 1.175 is fully charged. I think slow turnover batteries are the problem. Get one manufactured within 6 months!!
