Hugh and everyone - Water pump optional on Super A?

The Super A I just brought home has been sitting indoors goodness knows how long, but the motor was free. Poured a little gas in her, checked all vital fluids, put a good battery in her and after a few cranks, she started and ran well. Charges and everything! About time I had a little luck...

Does anyone know if the water pump was an option on the Super A? I've never seen a Super A without one, until I brought this last one home.

Also, the air breather pipe and cap seem to be a smaller diameter than usual, almost like a cub. Anybody ever seen anything like this on a Super A?

Thanks,

Funny, because I have never seen a Super A with one. I didn"t think the 113"s had them. My 1948 sure doesn"t.

My 54 super A does not have a water pump. The C113 didn't utilize one. The Super A1 with the C123 has a water pump as well as the Super C w/ C123.

That being said, there are kits available to add a water pump to the C113 motor. Saw a Super A at auction not long ago with such a setup.

I bought a "49, came without a pump. I just overhauled the engine, which involved new sleeves and pistons. The sleeves are thinner than the originals, the pistons slightly bigger, taking mine from a 113 to a 123. I added a water pump to mine, (a "reman" from IH), as the 123s came with one, and my 113 ran hot anyway.

Farmboy856: Water pump was not installed at factory until serial number 356001 in 1954. The tractors after that serial number were called Super A1 and engine was C-123, 3-1/8" bore and had a water pump and larger radiator.

The Super A started off in late 1947 with block part number 251069 R1, 3" bore, known as C-113 engine, with no water pump and it was non pressurized cooling system.

Early in 52 it got block part number 354898 R1, same block as Super C, however IH used thicker sleeves in SA keeping it at C-113, no water pump and still not pressurized cooling. That block will actually take 3 different bore sleeves, 3", 3-1/8" and 3-1/4". At serial number 336711 in early 53 the system was changed to pressurized, yet still no water pump.

You can add a water pump to every Super A ever built. You will encounter some difficulty finding a thermostat to fit with the smaller radiator used prior to serial 356001.
