Remove a steering wheel on a Farmall H

I have a 1943 Farmall H that I want to replace the steering wheel on. I have tried gear pullers, heat and hammers, and the old wheel has not budged. Before I break something, I thought I better as and see if there is some trick I don’t know about.

I know these are keyed in, but are they welded? I think this is the original wheel.

Thanks for any help…

Mike.

Had same problem with M. I just put a cut in it all the way to the shaft and them spread it with a chisel. Came right off Nuff said Henry

Not welded from the factory, but who knows what has happened in the last 60+ years?

I've always gotten them off with a puller, heat, and a good whack to the puller bolt.

Put some of your favorite penetrant on when it's hot. I like PB Blaster myself.

Sounds like you have already tried the normal tricks. The heat should have done it, but maybe you need to heat it up again, let it cool just a bit, spray it liberally with penetrating oil, then just walk away for about 20 minutes. Try the puller again. If it still won't move, you may need to split the hub.

Thanks guys...as I suspected...no trick, just brute force and a little patience.

I hope I hold together as well at 65 as this Farmall...

(quoted from post at 18:59:32 06/09/08) I use a good puller and turn it with an impact, that works for me.

Every good puller I've used an impact on seems to be not so good anymore after a couple years! But sometimes it seems like the only way to get something apart and when the crop needs to be put in (or taken off), you do what you have to to keep the equipment rolling!

Good slow heat and a good penetating oil. Not WD-40!!! It is th most overated thing ever. I like Kroil but Gibbs anf PB Blaster i've heard work just as well. Get it good and hot becasue it might be red on the outside but you have to get all the way throught the thick hub.

Put your puller on it and do it up tight to put lots of pressure on. Then when its under max available pressure apply your heat. Should do the trick MTF
