I have a 1950 H which when hot will not start but pull it 30' and it starts. Has just started that trick. Have put new plugs about 4 months ago, also had starter motor rebuilt 5 months ago. Has 12 volt battery and resistor. Has been very good to start fast until as of late. Any help would be thankful for. dick [email protected]

I would (when you have it hot) spray WD-40 around the connection where the intake manifold goes into the head.If this changes the rpm there maybe be such a thing as expansion causes an intake leak.

Have the battery load tested. If it's voltage drops during operation of the starter, you will have poor spark.

Apparently, it was set up with a 6-Volt coil and external resistor? Was a "starting bypass" installed to bypass the resistor during cranking?

I had an H with a bad coil that would quit and not start when it got hot. Do the coil check when it's hot - you may want to confirm this because it's been a while. I think you pull the center wire from the distributor cap (the one coming from the coil) and hold it using some thing _really_ insulated (like insulated pliers held with a heavy rubber gloved hand) about 1/8" to 1/4" inch away from a bare spot on the engine (be careful of oil and gas) and turn the engine over just a bit. If the spark you see is whitish-blue, your coil is good. If it's yellowish, the coil is bad.

I have a 47 H that would start and run fine all day but, if I ever cut it off it wouldn't start for anything as long as it remained hot. I suppose yours has a magneto as does mine. I am friends with an old IH mechanic that advised me that the coil in the mag was shot and he was right. I had him replace it and he told me that the old mag was the original, not bad for 60 years of service. The new coil was only about $35.00 and now she starts anytime and runs like a swiss watch.

The H does not have a mag, will try other suggestions tomorrow, was trying to bale hay today. Was able to get it started but did not start like it should. Thank you all for the help. dick

I had a similar problem with my H a few years ago. ran ok after I got it started, but had to tow it sometimes a quarter mile (I kid you not!) to get her going. I found the answer to my problem right here in the tip of the day box. I had never adjusted the valve clearances. After setting them fairly close, she would start on the starter for me and after warming it up and rechecking, the old girl fires on the first or second revolution.
Just someting you might want to try if the ignition checks out ok.

Low amperage/high voltage = ouch! or fall down and twitch, then get up really sore. (as in, TASER)

High amperage = fall down and smoke... and don't get back up.

Magneto/coil& distributor = low amperage, high voltage. See first line.
