stubborn cub starts hard

my cub loboy doesn't like to start off the starter. 6 volt system. it turns over just fine but won't fire. pull it, and its running as soon as i let the clutch out. its most likely to start with the starter when i turn it over and then let off the pull rod. if that makes any sense.
ideas? thanks.

How is the battery??? Check batt, voltage while cranking. If voltage is "good" check voltage at the coil terminal which comes from the ignition switch. If this voltage is "battery voltage" while cranking, suspect trouble in the points/condenser area. If voltage is low, check all connections in the primary ignition system---including the switch itself. You will be looking for a high resistance in the primary circuit. Don't overlook wire terminations--pull on them to check.

new set of HEAVY wires from battery to starter and to ground with all connections shined up.
my loboy does the same thing when the battery is low and needs recharged
voltage drops too low when cranking then jumps back up when you let off the starter and the motor is still turning so it starts

easy check:
use a good set of heavy jumper cables from battery negative to starter
battery positive to ground on starter
if it starts good
then replace battery cables completely with heavy cables

ron wins the prize (whatever it is) this time. i should have tried the heavy cable route, as it is the same thing with the M, only in a bigger package. a new flat ground cable and a better connection on the neg post and it starts like a new one. the loboy, my brother and i are all heading for the rpru in the morning, and i'd hate to need a tow for the parades.
