WD-9 problems

One of our WD-9's has a couple issues. For some reason it will not start on gas. The batteries are deader than dead but it has a mag. Does it still need some juice to have enough spark to run on gas. When it is running on diesel sometimes it cuts out like it is starving for fuel. It is really sporatic on when this happens sometimes it never does it sometimes thats all it will do. The fuel filters were replaced and that didn't help. My guess is some junk in the tank that blocks the hole. Any help of these two problems would be appreciated.

The magneto generates its own electricity, unless it's been cobbled up with an battery-type ignition coil. Only you will be able to look and see if that's been done.

Either way, it sounds like the magneto needs some work. It could be as simple as a tune-up (coil, condensor, points, cap), or you may need to have the magneto rebuilt. It should make a snapping noise every time a cylinder comes up on compression as you try to start it.

Since you suspect crud in the fuel tank, have you considered cleaning the fuel tank?

I agree with the first guy, if it has a mag it won't even need a battery present. Trust me...I just started my MD (and H) last weekend w/o a battery. With that said, my BIL left the on/off switch on on my SMTA and I went to pull start it a couple days later and I couldn't even drag it to a start. We swapped out batteries with the pickup and it started right up.

As for sporadic running, I have nothing. I think you should sell it to me and be done with it ;) That way I will have one that cuts out on diesel and one that fills the crankcase with fuel!
