Loaned my 656 hydro to my brothers son to pick up round bales. It stalled on him. would not start. He towed tractor to barn but did not know to put range selector in neutral. Now that tractor engine is running again, tractor will not go forward or reverse. What should I be looking for? Thanks in advance.

Ouch! That's gotta smart!

You might wanna look for another tractor because the young lad has in all likelihood ruined yours.

Just afraid that the price of repair is gonna be way more than the tractor is worth. You need a transmission. 'Bout $6K installed? :>(

Allan I know nothing about those hydro rear ends except they are expensive to repair.

Why would towing it without disengaging the hydro tear it up so bad?

Are the hydro motors turning dry or what happens?

You nailed it.

They don't oil without pressure and those 18 little brass pistons (nine in each motor) are running dry against the steel swish plates.

The slip plates, which are fitted at the heads of the pistons, just simply cook themselves to death due to the instant friction.

Add to that, that the 656 used an "iffy" slip plate material anyway and it just makes for an expensive situation all the way around. :>(

Last I heard, those pistons alone were $100 apiece and that was 2 or 3 years ago.

The real problem comes from the hydro motor swash plate is always set at an angle so when you try to move it it functions as a pump but the pump swash plates are most likely in the no pump flow position so as the motor turns it destroys the pivoting brass heads on the pistons. If you take it apart you will most likely find scored plates and the heads pulled off the motor pistons.
