Diesel Fuel

(quoted from post at 12:34:16 06/06/08) Just wondering if any of you use additives in your diesel fuel, what you use and why.
What I use: Nothing.
Why: Never had a reason; tractor starts fine, runs fine; have over 1200 hours on injectors - no problem.

Mike: We don't burn money either. Probably 45 years since I encountered my first diesel. Since then I'm well over a 100,000 hours on a dozen or so diesels, never used or bought an additive yet, other than Methyl Hydrate in sub zero weather.

Have never used additive either but the new Ultra Low Sulpher diesel could be a different situation, some say yes some say no.

Nope...just pull her hard often to keep her cleaned out. Diesels want to be worked or they get lazy.
Clean fuel...hard work and ya got a happy engine.

Re Diesel fuel, see following link:

Although it is Canadian, US and Canadian standards are very similar.

My only concern is the older Bosch injection pumps found in the IH German Diesels that were designed 40+ years ago when Diesel fuel was much different with more lubricity. These Bosch injection pumps have a lip seal on the pump drive shaft which is only lubricated via the Diesel fuel. When these lip seals wear they allow Diesel fuel to leak into the crankcase.

Another interesting link on older Diesel fuel injection systems and seal failures with newer Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel fuels.

Nope, no additives on our farm... and no injector or pump problems, either. Thousands of hours on numerous machines without any trouble. I guess we'll see if the this ULSD causes trouble within the next few years...

When I bought my first fill of diesel a 500 gal. barrel cost less than $60.00, my last fill was $2,225.00. Still the same barrel, Chuck

I would recommend you know your supplier and what type of fuel
your getting. I drove a fuel transport for a local supplier for a short
time. At the terminal you can get "X grade (furnace fuel) or "D"
grade (diesel fuel) which was a few cents higher. In the six months
I worked there I never picked up "D" grade but it was always diesel
fuel when I delivered it. Couldn't continue to work there, my
conscience wouldn't allow it.

I haven't used any additives yet, but since the change over to ULSD, the pumps on BOTH my Powerstrokes have started leaking. My diesel mechanic said he got a rush of such issues shortly after the change over. Don't really wanna fork out the $450 a piece to have em replaced, but that $5/gal fuel leakin on the highway is adding up pretty quick. Probly get em fixed, and start usin somethin to keep em together.

I have noticed a leak coming out from around my fuel pump on the 310 in my 706. Is it a safe bet to say the fuel is why its leaking?
