Went to take steering column out of radiator last night and had a heck of a time taking out retainer nut in the end. Anyone have any advice? Someone wrote to just unscrew the column. Does it just unscrew out the end of the worm gear box? Also, is there supposed to be oil in the worm gear box? It had a light coating on the gear inself, but no real volume. I thought I read once there was supposed to be oil in the box for the worm gear.

after you take the cap off the bolster to expose the end of the steering shaft, just unbolt the u-joint coupler up near the oil and temp gauge, spray some penetrating oil on the shaft at the joint, then turn the wheel back and forth a few times . it will loosen up and unscrew right out. the upper bolster should have 90wt oil in it, but if the bolster bushings are worn, it will leak past the seals. carter and gruenwald has a rebuild kit for the bolster for about 150.00, or you can go to your john deere dealer and get corn head grease and use that.

Actually uncouple the U-joint before turning the steering wheel? Do you have to remove the retaining nut on the front of the worm gear box?

I'm a bit confused when you say retaining nut on the steering box. Do you mean the plug, or the nut on the end of the steering shaft that holds the bearing?? You must take the big plug with the hex on the front of the steering box out before you can remove the steering shaft. I forget what size the hex is, but it takes a big socket to fit it. I use a 3/4 drive 6 point socket of the proper size and have never had a problem getting one out that way. Other wrenches, including a pipe wrench just seem to end up rounding off the hex and then it's really a mess. Once you have the plug out and the universal joint loose, the shaft should screw right out of the steering box. And yes there is supposed to be oil in the steering box. However, most of the old Ms have bad seals on the vertical shaft and the gear oil specified for them just leaks out. You can go to the trouble of repairing the surface of the vertical shaft, installing new bushings, etc., or you can just fill the box with chassis grease which seems to work just fine.

The nut on the end of the shaft merely holds the bearing on.

Remove the plug, slide the shaft out of the u-joint, and screw it right out of the upper bolster/gearbox.

I've packed mine full of grease because the oil just slobbers out and makes a mess.
