OT plow shins

How do you tell when plow shins need to be replaced ?

I have a JD No. 44 trip type plow and have been replacing the throw away shares every 2-3 years (it seems) and see that that new shares are quite a bit thicker than the moldboard and shins.

The back moldboard has a crack in the worn spot (center of draft ? ), so I'm guessing that they are shot too. Since the rest of it is obviously worn out, how do I tell if I need new shins ?

Thanks

Greg

Greg, Replace the shins before the frog begins to wear behind them. A new one will overlap the frog by about 3/4 inch in front, if they are left to long the frog will begin to wear. Moldboards I run until they break or shorten up on the lower edge excessively. Good luck, Chuck

Tom, Since about the 1940's the moldboards have been made in two pieces because the front wears more and threfore it can be replaced. That front piece is called the shin. Chuck
