Is a 49 M 6 or 12 Volt. If both 6 and 12 are out there how can you tell the difference without looking at th battery.

The particular tractor I am refering too has a negative ground. The positive runs to the starter swith then the starter. Would that definitely make it a 12 v system

Is there anything obvious to look for that will let me know if the tractor has been converted to 12v. If not, what harm could I cause by putting a 12v battery in it? And on the other hand if it is a 12v system and I put a 6v in it what are the drawbacks?

Pull a lite bulb. If it is still 6 v and not burned out, you better stay with 6. Also check the coil. If it has a resistor or is labeled 12v, it maybe a 12v system.

If you know it's the positive cable that runs to the starter, then it must still have an old battery in it??? Don't just go by what color the cables are....many guys will just use whatever cables they have lying around....seen many a red ground cable and many black positive cables on many different types of vehicles....of course, if you're going by the existing "size" of the battery clamp as it's been formed from tightening to a battery post, then yeah, the positive one is usually a bit bigger.
