Can any old solenoid work for my Farmall A? NAPA has one on hand & it looks pretty much the same as the one I took off.

Yes.
Your A never had one, so the one you buy will be fine. If it has 4 terminals, 2 small, and 2 big, the small labled "S" is the start switch terminal to make the starter turn. The ine with an "I" on it goes to the non-distributor side of the coil to assist starting voltage to the coil when starting (bypasses the ballast resistor).
If you have a mag, or 6v or 12v system W/O resistor, ignore the "I" terminal. JimN
