806D electrical

How do I check the electrical system of an 806 D with alternator? It will not keep the batteries charged, but alternator seems to be charging. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Simple checks.
1} while running at 1/2 or better RPM, put a volt meter across the battery/s. It should read between 14.2, and 14.7 volts.
If it does, it is charging.
2} check the batteries for dead cells. (unless sealed and no caps) using a specific gravity tester. should be 1175, or better when charged.
if cells are different more than 10% or so, the battery is poor.
3} With the engine off, remove a battery cable and check voltage from the terminal to the connector you removed. There should be less than .5 volts there. If more, there is a voltage leak. Disconnect components one at a time, and check for the leak (then replace if it makes no difference) so it doesn't become a wiring disaster.
Good luck, JimN

Could be the resistance unit ( porcelain thing found next to voltage regulator) has failed. I've replaced several over the years.
