Farmall M engine problem, need advice

I just purchased a Farmall M Tractor, a 1950 model, and after getting it home and running it for about 30 minutes, it started smoking a little light colored smoke, and it would smoke a lot when you accelerate. I also found a little oil leaking out around the number 2 spark plug. There is no evidence of water in the oil, but the crankcase was about 1 to 2 quarts overfull. I pulled out the number 2 spark plug and it was, of course, covered with oil, but the engine was not missing, it runs smooth. It is also blowing a little oil out the muffler. The tractor has not been used hardly at all in the last 6 months. I have never torn into a Farmall before. Do any of you Farmall guys out there have any idea what might be wrong? Where should I start to check for the problem? Thanks for any responsed?

Run it under load for at least 3-4 hrs. The sitting around is probably the problem..After that, let us know how much it smokes. Also lower the oil level to the correct level. use 15 40 oil JimN

I agree totally with janicholson - lower the oil level and run it for a couple of weeks first and see if things clear up. They often do on one that's been sitting. mike

That sure sounds good to me, I will take your advice and run it for a while. It is a very good tractor otherwise, it starts and runs great! Is there any kind of engine additive that I shoud try to maybe help it to straighten out?

Yes, there are products you can try. In the marine business, we used one by Evinrude - Johnson called "Engine Tuner", the primary purpose of which is to free up stuck rings and loosen carbon deposits. It works very well (- much better than injecting water while running). You spray it into the carb air intake while the engine is at fast idle. After 3-4 good long shots of it, you shut the engine down with it, let it sit for maybe two hours, then fire it up again and run it for a few minutes to clear the engine. The stuff will make a lot of smoke and kill every misquito for miles around, but it sure helps free up rings in a carboned up engine and boosts compression also.
I'm sure there are similar products at your local auto parts store. Good luck. mike
