leaking valve guides

My "41 H has a strange problem. It will run fine but starts puffing smoke sporadically, mostly when not under load. Its a bit better under load.

My thought is that I"ve got worn-out valve guides, but before I start tearing into the head, I"d like to hear everyone else"s opinions.

I would start with a compression check to be sure the rings are good...

Worn valve guides usually give a puff of smoke at start-up and as they get progressively worse will continue blue smoke at any time while running. The smoke may go away under a load due to the increased temperature being able to make for a more complete burn of the oil.

Is it smoking excessively? Is it using oil? Does it blow oil out the exhaust that gets on you and/or the tractor?

Personally, I wouldn't let a few puffs of blue smoke cause me to tear a good running engine down unless their is excessive oil usage or a mess being made...

I like Perfect circle type valve seals. d
D?
o what Steven indicates, and if good, go with seals, they can be installed W/O removing the head. Idle and part throttle conditions cause high vacuum. high vac on the intake valves suck hard on the stem to guide area, causing more noticible smoke then. going down a long hill in fifth will make it smoke the most. i was wondering about putting valve seals on a h what i need to get are we talking like ford or chevy style seals?

P circle seals have a teflon ring riding on the stem, and it is free to move within a small chamber in the rubber part of the seal. this short stroking action meters oil into the guide. They can be put on almost any engine. The ones with cast in place valve guide bosses must be machined to take the rubber part of the seal. Most with pressed in guides do not need any machining.
