Timing the magneto

I am installing a live hydraulic pump on my M. It is attached ahead of the magneto and it drives the mag. How do I align the gear mark on the pump gear so it will mimic the alignment of the magneto drive? One fellow on this forum, speaking of the H, wrote that placing the drive so the drive lugs are horizontal will align the mark to that of the cam gear, or will at least be close. Would this work for the M also? Short of removing the front cover, is trial and error the only solution?
 
If the mag was removed & you didn't note where the mag's rotor was pointing or you've move the engine since removing the mag you will need to bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke.

Then rotate the mag's rotor to the No1 plug tower
on the cap which is near 2 o'clock and install mag on the engine. Hal
 
Hal: I treated the pump the same as I would the mag--trying to align it's gear mark with the cam gear mark- #1 on TDC and the pump lugs pointing to 2 o'clock as I would the mag. Then set the mag to fire at #1 and installed it. The engine started, but isn't right. Runs best with the magneto retarded as far as it will travel. Am I off 1 tooth on the pump gear?
 
To find out how much you're off is to bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke again. Your timing mark on the damper pulley should be aligned with pointer, then remove the mag's cap and then see where the rotor is pointing. It should be pointing to the No1 plug tower. If its off you will need to pull the mag and place the rotor at the No1 plug tower. Then see if it runs ok. Hal
 
For gosh sakes, just put the drive in so the slot is horizontal when @ #1 piston is at TDC, then install the mag.

You guys make this WAY too complicated!!!!!

All the messing around you can do with the timing marks will STILL result in the slot being horizontal @ #1 TDC!
 
Thanks for your reply. I'm not smart enough except for the simple things. I will install the live hydraulic pump, with slots horizontal, then the magneto the same way. #1 at TDC and the magneto set to fire #1. Thank you.
