I purchased a beautifully restored farmall 140 hi-clear and need assistance to figure out what i need to convert to a 3 pt hitch. My first need is to get a slip clutch and a woods mower but can someone tell me what i need first.

yenaled: Number one and probably most important in keep cost in line, is you tractor already equipped with a factory rear rockshaft? Once you have that it's quite simple. Being a hi clear model it may present a few problems in that hitch linkage will need to have a different lifting range the a regular 140. I have built quite a few 3 point hitches for regular clearence SA, 100, 130 and 140, however with these being roughly 6" higher off ground, geometry is going to be a bit different. You want it to be able to set implements on the ground yet lift them about same height in relation to ground as regular clearence tractor.

If you wish send me an e mail. I can park my 140 on 6" blocks with implement attached, then quote you exactly what changes you need to make it work decent. I suspect it will take about 3" longer lower link, but until I set this up, I cant be certain. Measure the height of PTO shaft from ground as well as clearence under front axle. I don't remember the exact clearence difference, plus my 140 has over size tires so factory specs wouldn't be great help. To give you good advice, I just want to be sure my tractor is same ground clearence as yours when I have it on blocks for measuring.

thanks a bunch and i will send a pic and measurement of pto to ground. appreciate the help
as i only have a couple of weeks til the grass overtakes my pasture.

center of pto to ground is 34.875" and bottom of front axle to ground is 26.25". i want to send a pic so you can see if i have that factory rear rockshaft but not sure how to attach it. thanks again.

Hugh,
I have an SA and want to put a 3 pt on it. can you send me a pic of one of yours and a parts list i would need?
Thanks

What is the slip clutch you mention? Is that something you'll use to couple the woods mower?
Thanks,
Randy

He probably means an overrunning clutch. A slip clutch is the wrong kind of clutch for this tractor, as the mower should already be equipped with one. Mowers are usually equipped with slip clutches.

A slip clutch is three disks with friction material in between each disk. The outer disks are coupled to the PTO shaft of the mower. The inner disk is coupled to the tractor's PTO shaft. Bolts clamp the outer disks around the smaller inner disk. By tightening and loosening the bolts you can control how much power gets transmitted before the clutch starts to slip, so when the mower hits an obstruction, the clutch slips and the mower doesn't break.

On tractor with non-live PTO like a 140, you want an overrunning clutch unless the mower is already equipped with one. An overrunning clutch is a ratchet that freewheels in one direction, so that when you push the clutch on the 140, the momentum of the mower blades doesn't push back through the PTO shaft and drive the tractor forward.

One thought I just had, the angle of the PTO shaft may be too extreme from the tractor to the mower on a hi-clear. Chatter...chatter...bang! if you know what I mean...

i am concerned about that possibility but i did see another hi-clear 140 rigged up with a woods mower but i think his tires were not as large as mine. thats what i am trying to check out. the center of the pto is 34.875" from ground level. any thoughts?
