656 Hydraulics (problem)

Hello,
We have a 656 Farmall that we bought last summer and I'm getting it ready for hay season. When we bought it, I noticed that it seemed like the frontend loader couldn't pick a bale as high as I thought it should have. I wondered about a weak pump, but the 3 point would pick up heavy implements OK. Well, I hooked the hyd. to the cylinder on my JD mower conditioner and it wouldn't pick it up high enough to get the bolt out of transport mode on mower. I hooked it to my Vermeer baler and it would only raise the back gate 1/2-3/4 of the way up. I don't like to think that the pump is bad , especially since the 3 point works OK, but does anyone have any other suggestions (pressure relief valve or ?)? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

On a lot of these tractors, the 3pt pump is different from the hydraulic cylinder pump. The 3pt pump also controls power steering, etc, I think.

Have you checked the hydraulic fluid level? Lifting only part way, may indicate low oil levels. Keep running like that and you will have a bad pump.

MKIRSCH,
Yeah,I have checked the Hy-Tran fluid level and it seems to be fine. Usually when a pump is starving for fluid you get that "growl" from the pump, but this is not the case. It just seems to max out on lift. Thanks.

What's the fluid look like? Have you changed the filters yet? Are you 100% positive it's full? 5 gallons over full won't hurt these tractors one bit.

The only way to check the condition of your pump for sure is to get someone with the pressure and flow gauges to hook up to it...

Or,

Hook it up to something and see if it lifts. :>)

Odds are about 300% that the front pump is shot. That's an old tractor. :>)

Hello Scott,
your hitch uses a different pump. one thing you could try is try to lift some thing with the loader when it stops moving try holding the steering over to the stop and see if it lifts higher. if it so maybe your problem is in the flow divider. but most times i have found the pump is bad. A new 17 gallon pump is around $450

Put a hydraulic pressure gauge on a quick connect tip and see what it reads. I fought a loader problem on a 656 for about a year. Old pump was only putting out 900psi, new one instantly brought it up to 1600psi. (The ultimate solution to my loader problem was a quick connect that failed on an intermittent basis but it doesn't sound like you are ever getting full psi so it sounds more like the pump.) S/be able a new 17GPM for about $380 w/shipping. Don't forget to get a new suction tube, pump housing gasket, and the oring and gaskets that go between the main pump and the piggy back pump. If you have all that stuff on hand BEFORE you start it's a really quick job.

I really appreciate everyone's advice on this matter. It seems to be the general concensus that it is the pump. I guess I was just hoping against hope that it wasn't. I'm going to pick up a coupler tomorrow and put a gauge on it and see what I get. Thanks for all the help guys.
