I've just got the Super C running again after a touch control rebuild and replacing the timing gears. I'm having trouble retaining the thermostat in position, it keeps popping out when the engine is started. Evidently the original clip isn't up to the job any more. Has anyone got a good solution to this? Also one of the levers on the touch control is very stiff, is this likely to improve with use or should I check into it before I damage something? Many thanks, tractorsam

Without feeling it, I don't know for certain what "very stiff" means; but given the time and money you've put into it, I'd disconnect the lever rod and try to work the control rod by hand to determine if the stiffness is in the friction control of the lever, or in the touch control unit itself. It shouldn't be that stiff if there is no blockage. But, a new valve (if new during the rebuild) can be pretty stiff. It's a judgement call I think. No clue on the thermostat, sorry.

Sam,

I cleaned the thermostat snap ring groove, used a new ring, and have not had any trouble with it. It seems if there is much of a groove at all, the right size snap ring should be able to hold the thermostat back.

My Touch Control was a little stiff at first and (after setting the stops underneath with the pressure gauge) the pump would load down the motor on start up. Cycling the levers all the way back and forward once would make it stop. After a few hours (10, 20 ?) of using it, the problems have cleared up.

Sam: Very few touch control levers work properly anymore. Even further, very few people understand how they work properly. I find one has to completely diassemble them every 5-10 years, clean and lubricate everything with graphite.

The double nut is supposed to set tension on the friction pad, however that adjustment doesn't work well if the sleeve next to locking nuts is turning with nuts and shaft. I put new friction pads and springs on my SA and 130 about 10 years ago. I notice the sleeves are once again turning, and they need to be cleaned and lubricated again.

On the thermostat issue, forget that damn clip, throw it in the Bay of Fundy. I use pipe sleeves inside the hose to hold the thermostst against port on engine, then just use a hose clamp to keep sleeve in position.
