cam- magneto timing

hoping someone can help! going to reinstall magneto drive( 4 bolts& has gear on end) it has punch mark on gear but i can not find any mark on cam gear, book says theirs a chamfered tooth , but i cant find any been around least 10 times. thanks for helping if i had a old cam gear maybe i could see what a chamfered tooth looks like

The SIMPLE solution...

ASSUMING the crankshaft-camshaft timing has not been disturbed:

NO timing marks are needed...

The slot in the mag drive will be HORIZONTAL when #1 cylinder is @ TDC.

That will take a couple of tries, due to the helical gears, but that's ALL that's needed.

Well, if it was running before, it will run after you've set it up as in my previous post.

If you get #1 at TDC, on the mark, the tooth will be where you think it should be. A tiny mirror, and some feel should find the beveled tooth. Mark it on the drive side with a felt pen. JimN

If you get #1 at TDC on compression, on the mark, the tooth will be where you think it should be. A tiny mirror, and some feel should find the beveled tooth. Mark it on the drive side with a felt pen. JimN

WHY go through all that, when the result will be the same... slot horizontal @ #1TDC???

(As I posted, as long as the crankshaft-camshaft iming is unmolested.)

I think he took the mag drive casting and gear out of the front cover! That would make the position of the drive wrong if the gear was in wrong. JimN

The point is, with the engine @ #1 TDC, all he needs to do is shove the drive back in there with the gears meshed so the slot is HORIZONTAL when the drive is fully in place. That's where it will be if he lines the timing marks up, as well.

This applies to 'most ALL old mag-fired engines, no matter WHAT make.

That will work,
I think he needed that bit of info. The helical gears require planning to get the slot where it belongs, and (in this case to get it at TDC)
It could also be that he has the mag attached to the drive housing, and cannot see the drive slot! JimN
