WD6 Starter Problems !!

I recently bought a Rebuilt starter for my 1950 wd6 off ebay. When I put the starter on the tractor it would not crank it over. then I tried to move the tractor back and forth and the engine would not turn over. I compared the two starters and they look the same. What could be doing this???

Check the nose or gear end of the starter, there are slight differences in the ends of some of them. It may be going in to far and bind the ring gear. Will the engine turn over without the starter in it? Some have tried to pass regular gas starters off for diesels they are different. Just a few things to check.
