H keeps shutting down

Got an H with a problem. Looking for some help and ideas. When cold, starts and works fine, power is decent for 50+ year old tractor. Once the work begins and things heat up, the tractor will die and will not re-start until some time/cooling has passed. Used to think carb, but carb has been gone through, so now on to electrical. Any known items on the H model prone to shorting out when hot?

Sounds an awful lot like the symptoms of a bad coil. I'd start there. Just make sure you get the right replacement, i.e., for 6V or 12V, whichever you have.

Probably is the problem....Dad liked the speed of the starter with a 12v battery and went to a 12v a couple of years ago without changing anything from 6v to 12v. Tractor gets just a few hours a year, so makes sense that it took some running time to burn it out to shorting when hot.

Sounds like your dad didn't add a ballast resistor ahead of the existing 6 volt coil. On a steady diet of 12 volts the old 6 volt coil will overheat and quit sparking after a few minutes.

Cheapest solution is to wire in a ballast resistor into the primary before the coil. A resistor for any 60's era Chrysler vehicle works great. (Autozone #AL795 or equivalent - about $8)

Tip: Check the breaker points too! If they've run very long on 12 volts they're very likely burned and should be replaced.

Use a 12v coil with the resistor built in.Those ballast r4esistors are garbage, they add one more component and 2 more connections that can give you trouble.

Stopped at the local tractor shop and ordered up a 12v coil. Was only $25, so not too bad. Thanks to all for their thoughts and ideas. YT forum users are great and very considerate. Hopefully the new coil will solve the problem long term and keep the H in the sunshine, not the barn.
