Farmall A starter issue?

Went to start the A last night. It started right up but the starter continued to spin extremely fast while the tractor was running. I had to hit the kill switch to stop it...unhooked the battery & the tractor stayed running along w/ the starter spinning.

Is it a starter, solenoid or key switch wiring issue?

The battery is new & yes it is electric start.

Also, in all this mess, I have a small copper plug on the starter that the solenoid wire attaches to. The screw broke off in this when tightening this. Can I just drill another hole in the top of this? I have a #1 cable going to it & this small screw makes it difficult to attach.

Sounds like the bendix is shot. It is hanging up when it should kick out. Pull the starter and take it to a repair shop that works on starters and generators. They should be able to take care of the other problems also.

It "kicks" out to start the tractor but just keeps spinning very fast...maybe the spring is not retracing??

Problem is, it was just rebuilt about 1.5yrs ago & it was taken back about 6mo after that because it was just dead one day.

Is it time to just buy a refurb starter & move on?? Let me know your thoughts on this.

Thanks - Pat

I'm guessing you have a key type start set up so yes it could be a bad ignition switch or a stuck soliniod. You can tap on the soliniod and some times that will fix it for a time. If that does not work then its probably time for a new soliniod. BTDT more then once

You are correct Old! Is anyone familiar w/ the copper plug on top of the starter I mentioned?

Can that piece be replaced? Does it just snap in there somehow? It doesnt appear to have any threads...pretty soft material for threads!

Copper plug?? If you mean the bolt then it has to be done by a shop because its soldered in. Now if it had the old type push button switch on it at one time it might look like a plug there and again it has to be done by a shop

If there was no electricity going to it, and it still spun, the drive is in need of replacement. There is a new clutch style drive at the caseih dealer that is much better than the old style. If the copper pisec you refer to is the contact that is located on the side of the starter motor casing, and is just a "bump" of copper, it is originally intended to be a switch contact, and not be connected to with a cable. In this case, it may have had threads put in it to hold a cable with your non stock setup. A motor repair shop can install a new stud through the case with the ability to put an official nut on the real threads. It is possible to silver solder an adapter bolt to the stud you have, but W/O taking it all the way apart, the heat will melt the insulator. Best of luck, JimN

Pat: It sounds like it's time to find a different starter rebuild shop. mike

That button is for a sw that mounts on the starter so yours must be messed up and uses something else to make the starter turn over. Your soleniod must be bad.
