farmall h steering gear

I would not worry about the up and down play. Pull the cotter pin on the sector gear nut, hit the nut with am impact wrench. It is a taper fit. When you know it is good and tight, align the holes and reinstall the cotter pin and don't worry about the up and down play.
If you absolutely cannot get it out of your mind, try various spacers under the sector gear until there is almost no play. However, if you get too thick of a spacer, then you won't be able to tighten the sector gear on the taper tighly enough without binding up the steering. Personally, I would not worry about it. mike

I agree with Mike. You don't need to worry about the up and down movement unless you have a wide front end in which case it will make a difference. Roger

Don - Like the others point out a small amount of vertical play - less than about 1/2" or so - is normal. More than that can mean the pivot shaft thrust bearing has failed.

To check the condition of the thrust bearing jack up the front end. Now look for wear on the bolt heads that attach the lower bolster to the pivot shaft flange, and from the bolt heads rubbing on the underside of the fixed bolster casting. Also look for wear on the steering gearbox cover from the pivot shaft nut rubbing on the underside of the cover.

Either of the above means the thrust bearing needs to be replaced. Otherwise don't worry about the vertical play!

Nope!

The thrust bearing is a large diameter annular contact ball bearing located just above the pivot shaft flange.

It is replaced by dropping the pivot shaft out of the fixed bolster. It normally comes down with the pivot shaft as it is lowered.

Other than causing the worm and gear to not line up correctly a failed thrust bearing has no effect on either part.
