Farmall 300 Problems?

I have a TO 30 and have a chance to trade it for a 300 utility. I have been told not to trade because the 300"s have a problem with the streering gear box going bad. Is this true and what other problems does the 300 have? I like the TO 30 because they use very little fuel and are easy for my son to drive but the lack of live PTO makes it hard for him to drive it in front of our square Baler.

I know of several tractors that done away with the gear boxes and linkages and upgraded with orbital power steering parts from old combines. Also TSC used to have orbital power steering kits I think. Armand

I am an IH man through and through. But, if I had a good TO-30 and my only choice was to trade it for an I-300, I'd keep the TO-30. No contest. mike

There are a lot of good things that can be said for the 300 U, like good strong power, live hydraulics, maybe power steering, independent PTO, plus others. But "easy on gas" is not one of its fine points. And the disc brakes can be a constant problem. The fast hitch is good, but not the equal of a true 3 pt.

I have had my 300 U for 30 years and it has done a lot of work including pulling the baler and trail wagon, but if you have hills on your hay fields, then you don't have enough tractor weight to control the baler and flat bed. We came very close to a couple of serious accidents as the baler and wagon jack-knifed on the down hill pushing the tractor. It is like a big accordian coming closed.

The 164 cu inch engine on the 300 U is a much tougher engine than the Continental Z 129 on the TO 30, but it is fitted with the M carb, making it much thirstier than the 152 cu inch H engine, and very much thirstier than the Cont Z 129.

Good Luck with your decision.

I have several 300 and 350Us. I like them. Lot of folks say they are bad on gas, but few take into consideration the size of the fuel tank. It's too small. When you figure that and the amount of work that can be done with it...good piece of iron.
Yeah, the steering box is a weak point, but a lot of them have been abused over the years because it's hard to get to for service. I have 2 that have never, ever caused a problem...but dad had them and he kept them up really well.
Good tractor...heavy for it's size, but a good all around tractor.
Just my 2 cents.....

I like them as well. Steering is not an issue when maintained. and can be fixed if worn. We bale exclusively. JimN

I am going to "test drive " the 300 today to see if my son can pull the baler in front of a wagon on level ground. Then I will probably trade for it if it runs good.
