crumbled plastic on starter solenoid - ARGGH!

So, I just the starter for my IHC 806 back from the rebuild shop. All beautiful and ready to install. I put it in. Then, when I'm connecting the battery cable to the lug on the solenoid, I apparently got a little over zealous with my wrench and the plastic cap broke apart into about 4 pieces! Doh!

The lug is basically a carriage bolt and the square hole in the plastic is supposed to keep it from turning. I can see how it would not take much force to break it. If I had a thin wrench I could have held onto the thin nut on the lug and avoided this.

Tomorrow morn I'm going to attempt to super glue it together. This is exactly the kind of thing that CA glue is good for.

If not, is it possible to buy just the plastic piece at the end of a delco solenoid? Or, I guess a whole new solenoid is needed.

Check with NAPA. I think they have the cap as part of a rebuild kit. Have the number off your starter available. Local starter/generator shop may have a new or used one also. HTH.

Just plain forget the glue idea.

Those solenoid rebuild kits cost very little and it will be well worth your time to do it right.

Leave the glue to the model airplane kids before that cable pops off and welds itself to something, fuel line, fuel tank. It will find a ground somewhere and it won't be near as easy a repair as a new cap now.
