Allan: German is correct, it may even be same bore and stroke as 358. Seems I remember that same idea as the 282 and 188

Allan, D-239 found in 724,574,674,684,544,685,695,4210 and some industrial models. Uses same parts as some of the 6 cylinder German Diesel engines.

Allan: Jim's post mised one version, that being the one used in 544. internally it is the same engine as the German built tractors he mentions, however the block was casted heavier for those German tractors without frame rails.

I ran into this before I sold my 504, scrapyard near me had a couple of D239 from burnt German built tractors. Most of fire had been in cab and dash area. I explored the idea of buying one for the 504. It was going to require a lot of modification to put one of those in a Farmall.

It is 4 cylinders of the German built 358

I'm wrestlin' with myself over this little swather.

Big boys tell me that they were known to be a little cold blooded in the starting department. Just got to thinkin', if it's a German, that's the reason why.

Thanks,

Allan

might it be possible to just change the timing cover and rear plate to make the engine mate to a farmall?
type d-239 into the case-ih parts pages and take a look.

Allan, nice swather. My brother has D239 in his 684 and has over 8,000 hrs on it and still running good. As for starting it is harder to start than his D206 or D179 but with a sniff of ether it will start to about 10F and below that he uses the recirculation block heater for about an hour and no problems. It should have a START position on the STOP/RUN control. You would not be swathing in that cool of temperature.
D239 is economical to run, the most we ever used was about 2 US gal/hr chopping corn silage and that was with the pump turned up to about 70 PTO HP. After we finished chopping corn then we would turn pump back to normal.
