I need a little help on my Farmall M. Replaced the manifold on Friday. Friday, Saturday, Sunday chopped green chop all was well tractor running great with new manifold. This afternoon it has no power. Seems to run smooth at idle or full throttle but rapid acceleration it stumbles terribly and when I try to start the chopper it will loose all power sputter and die. I had to limp home in 3rd gear. This one has me sort of confused. It seems like a manifold leak again but how? Any ideas?

Make sure that the manifold bolts are tight. Make sure that the carburetor to manifold bolts are tight. Also make sure that the carburetor is clean and properly adjusted and be sure that there is a good clean flow of gasoline to the carburetor. Make sure that there is a good blue spark at all the spark plugs and be sure that the wires are in good condition. If you do not have copper core plug wires, get them, they make a big difference.

Good luck.
Andy.

Don't overlook the condenser when troubleshooting. Sounds like fuel delivery problems, but if that doesn't get results, try a new condenser & check point gap.

If it turns out the manifold is leaking again, take it down to the automotive machine shop and have it surfaced to bring it back true. That will really help keep them from blowing gaskets. mike

Yes this is what I am afraid of. Buy a new manifold and have to have it machined. I am reasonably certian it is not in the ignition system but not 100 percent sure its not in the carburetor. I have retightend the manifold and carburetor. What is the best way to find a manifold leak. I have tried spraying brakeclean around but did not notice any changes in idle... I have never really had any luck finding leaks that way. Suggestions?

Hmmmmm,

Don't think it's the manifold because you have a good idle.

Hi fuel circuit just a bit too lean? That will cause that stumble. Especially so, since you say that it runs all right at WOT.

Allan

Well it runs smooth at WOT but no power. I tried adjusting the mixture with no real change in how it runs.

What are the chances that it burned out a gasket in 3 days of running. I ran it pretty hard sunday then parked it monday it acted up.

Tell ya Bill,

I've been turning wrenches since I was 6 years old. Have found that when ya get to "fighting" a problem, back up, shake it off and come at it again like you've never seen the outfit before.

Approach it as tho it is a totally different tractor with a brand new problem; as if you have no prior history on the tractor. Go back to basics and start all over covering all the bases.

Anything is possible, but I just don't understand how it could idle sweet and still be sucking air; doesn't make any sense.

I had one last spring that had me pulling my hair out. Acted just like yours. Everything pointed at fuel starvation/no power.

Turned out to be the coil. Without a load, that thing ran like a new watch too. :>(

Hope you find your glitch,

Allan

I was hoping to get back to planting some beans tonight and forget about it like you said. I got another tractor on the chopper for now with a cab, A/C, radio, live PTO, better hydraulics, more power, but its just not as fun as the old M. My WD-45 is tying up the shop awaiting paint on the rims and new tires so once I get that out the M will come in.

Thanks Allan, I will try to keep all options open.
