M trans. seal

How hard is it to replace the front oil seal of the transmission on my M. Do I have to split the tractor? I beleive it is part 43359D on case IH's website. Any information would be great. I know I will have to drain the oil out but what else do I have to do. I don't have a belly pump so I don't need to take it out. What are the Steps involved?

thanks, -zach-

Top or bottom shaft?

Top shaft seal is harder to replace because the input shaft that goes from the clutch to the tranny has to be removed. On the bottom shaft all you have to do is unscrew the belly pump drive, remove the seal retainer and then replace seal.

You don't have to split the tractor. The seal you are talking about is the transmission input shaft seal. If you have a belly hydraulic pump, you probably want to replace the counter shaft (bottom shaft) seal as well while you are in there. To replace these seals, you do have to remove the belly pump and the clutch shaft. It's a bit tricky to get the clutch shaft out from under the bottom, but it can be done. Both the top and bottom seals run on the couplings, not the shafts, so you have to get the shaft couplings off the shaft before you can remove the seal holders. The top shaft has a key and must be pulled or pryed off with a pry bar. The bottom shaft coupling is screwed on and unscrews in the counter clockwise direction. It's usually on there tight and can be difficult to break loose to unscrew it.

If the seal is leaking, more than likely the bearing behind it needs to be replaced also.
Been there, done that......

I just replaced last weekend the exact same seal. I'm sure it was leather,or the worst piece of rubber I've ever seen. Mine is on a Super W6 that had a slipping clutch.
You won't need to drain any oil as the oil level is much lower, only on the bottom shaft. Left side of tractor has a plug you remove for topping up gear lube. Bottom gears splash oil up to the input shaft
Local Case dealer got me everything the next day for a good price to.
