Is my $1,000 mistake gonna cost me more?

Earlier I posted about how I damaged my 460u PTO. After having a service shop repair it, I have re installed it. Now I started the tractor with the PTO lever in the ON position, the tractor ran normal. When I slowly moved the lever to the OFF position, The tractor began to labor. The firmer I pushed on the lever the harder it labored. I stopped exerting pressure, I didn't want to damage it. Since it's a holiday I can't call the service guy to question him about adjustments. When I picked it up he said it was ready to install. I guess I should have asked him if it was ready to use. I could use some help on how to adjust. If you can tell me anything not to do I would rather hear it from you guy's than experience it!

Thanks

Butch

If I'm not mistaken, the PTO has clutches to transfer the power, and a brake to keep it from spinning when the clutches are disengaged (there's always a little bit of drag that'll cause the PTO to spin).

It sounds like the clutches are not disengaging, but the brake is engaging. That would explain why the engine is laboring more as you push the lever forward harder.

From what I saw on your pictures the other day, you have the band type of PTO. When the lever is all the way forward, the "brake" band is applied. When the lever is just back of the brake"click -lock" it should be in neutral. Fully back is applying the "engage-on" band. I forget which band adjust is which--on the right front of the PTO unit. They are under that oblong cover held down by a screw, on top of the PTO case. Don't know for sure, but I'd guess that the "engage" band is too tight--needs loosened. Someone else will probably know more.

Went back & looked--yours probably is a clutch type PTO--rather than band-type. We went through our 560's unit a few years ago & the guy at the dealer's set it up to snap in & out. Set it after clamping the unit in a vise--can't remember what he adjusted though. Sorry.
WE used a pair of sawed off bolts to slide the PTO unit into place on the tractor. Remove after other bolts have been threaded in.
