Extra lever on M

My "M" has a lever down and to the left of the gear shift lever. The connecting rod goes past the battery box to a lever on the side of the torque tube, behind the clutch and ahead of the transmission case. The throw is very short. Is this a two-speed shifting mechanism? Thanks

As Bill said, sounds like an M&W 9 speed setup. It is a 2 speed setup that gives you two speeds in gears 1-4. Does not affect 5 as that is direct drive. The extra speeds are faster than the original speed in each gear. The set up also affects the PTO, as when in the high speed range, the PTO also turns faster.

If its on the left when seated on tractor, that is the shifter location for a hiesler 9 speed set up. But if thats what it is the linkage and shaft should go in side of transmission behind torque tube. You may have a aftermarket hydraulic pump drive disconnect if linkage goes ahead of transmission. Also some M&W 9 speeds that were cable shift ended up with owner modified shifting that still used the bolt hole in front of transmission case for transmission entry.
