IH 424 Stuck in Reverse

I have a IH 424 and was out mowin and was backing into a stall by the barn. When I went to pull out the engine died. Somehow the trans is stuck in reverse and I cant get it out. I am able to slip into 2 3 and 4 but when i let off the clutch the engine struggles and tries to quit. I can still select H and L gear but no matter what I'm in reverse. I cant physically move the shifter over all the way to the left to try R or 1 but any time the shifter is in the N position Im in reverse. Fluid is filled to level plug as manual says...Just converted it to vertical exhaust and fixed some electrical problems and has been running perfect last 3 days. But now this!!
Any Suggestions??

Bob is correct. Pull the lever and realign the shift rails in the trans with a big screw driver. This is common. If it has a worn pin holding it in, make a new one from a grade 5 bolt cut to the right length. if the pin is good, the tip of the shifter that enters the rails may need to be welded up a little and ground to fit better. there are pictures in caseih.com, and in the search for area here. Let us know if it helped. JimN

Havent worked on it yet. Noticed the Farmall IH specific forum and was just getting all the ideas I can before I dig in.
I will let you know how it turns out.

Hi IntHarv, we had a 434(same frame as 424) do the same thing. Sometimes you could retrace your shift steps and get the gear shift lever to pop back into the correct shifter fork. Example yours is stuck in Rev and if you were going to second, then go to second and bring the shift lever half way over to rev side and go back to neutral and hopefully the shift lever will catch enough of the rev shifter to return it to neutral.
If that doesn't work then do as the others have said, remove shift lever and align shifters with big screwdriver. See caseih.com and go to parts for 424 and rear frame page 89 has a diagram of the parts.

Great news! I took the pin out today and saw the miss aligned rail. I put it back in place and all is well!
Thanks Bob!
