my son and i took a sunday stroll last week end. the boy on his 140 and me on my 230 i was in front . that 140 could run circles around that 230. me running wide open and the boy was less than half open he would have to clutch the 140 to keep from running over me. was there a slow 4th gear option on the 230s or where they just that durn slow?

Thats the way my 1946 A and Super C are. The A goes so fast it's scary at WOT. Now the 12.4 X 24 tires are taller than the 9 X 24 factory ones so that accounts for some, but the A is so light and if the road is bumpy you can't run 4th WOT.

Terry: you put 9.5x24 on the 140 and 11.2x36 on the 230 and they will be very close to each other in top speed. You put 12.4x24 on a 140 and it will out run just about any factory tractor up to 1970. 12.4 tire is about 6" taller than 9.5.

Another factor that can make some of these faster is someone tampering with the governors.

Calif. Farmall, Hugh sounds like you hit the nail on the head on this one :D so if i hadnt just put two new 11.2x36 tires 0n the 230 what size would you recomend to speed it up a little?

Terry: Even if you put 12.4x36 or 13.6x36 on the 230, I don't think you will see as much increase in speed as with 24" tires. I stand corrected as I've never done any exact calculting on this matter.

What I can tell you is I took 300 from 12.4x38 to 13.6x38, 560 and 656 from 15.5x38 to 16.9x38. I don't remember the kind of speed increase that I got moving 130 and 140 from 11.2x24 to 12.4x24. It could be the larger tractors were not a noticable.
