H trans gears

Just traded my nice Winchester Mod 88 .284 cal for a H that is maybe 1950? Eng. is not stuck, single front and nice 3 pt. Not sure if I got a good deal I only had a few min to look over the H and haven't picked it up yet. The guy said the front input bearing is out and the cover is off with a little surface rust on the gears. Any tricks to replace? I know the case has to be split. Any thing to watch out for? I've built a few of car 5spd and a few Honda auto trans, so to me looks basic enough. Just looking for a little info. Thanks DAN.

Sounds like you got a good deal, I wish I had a gun to trade for a tractor!!! If you get the serial # off the tag on the clutch housing, we can give you the year of the tractor. If you can, post some pictures of that H when you pick it up.

Good luck.

Andy.

Dan,

If the transmission cover is off, the hard part is done. Get yourself an I&T service manual. The IH manual does cover the trans, but not as well (in my opinion) as the I&T. Both assume that you know what you are doing. A parts book is always helpful. If you are going to keep the tractor, the Operators Manual has a lot of basic information on maintenence, some repairs, and lube capacities.

The tractor does not have to be split to replace the transmission input bearing, but you will get to crawl under it. Check the input shaft pilot bearing and replace it if there is any doubt as to it's condition. Check the rest of the trans and rear end bearings before you go too far. The bearings can run $100 or so a piece for good quality ones.

Surface rust on the gears would not concern me.

Removing the top cover is not necessary to replace the input shaft bearings.

Remove the Lift-All pump assembly. Remove the drive shaft coupler. Remove the front flange of the transmission input shaft. Remove the bolts holding the input shaft assembly to the transmission frame. Remove the input shaft assembly.

The two input shaft bearings will be in the assembly you removed. The main shaft pilot bearing can be serviced through the opening where the input shaft was located.
