farmall h head with crack

just got head back from machine shop,it has a crack from center bolt hole(the one with the steel sleeve)to the small water jacket hole that is the closest. wondering if anyone has seen this before & will it be all right? also new head gasket says this side out does that mean this side up? thanks again

Yes and Yes ... My factory Super M head had 6 cracks in it and it ran fine. Just make sure your not getting milky oil that is coolent in the oil. Spray both sides of the head gasket with spray copper and let it get close to dry.

Retorque after running it to operating temp , you should be fine.

thanks, ill be putting it together soon but not sure what spray copper is, is it paint?

Coppercoat Spray gasket sealant. NAPA has it, very fine material. JimN

As long as you are not getting antifreeze in the oil, it might be alright. The side of the gasket that says "This side out" will go towards the cylinder head.

Which head is it ? If it is a kerosene or distillate head, junk it and buy a rebuilt gas head. The compression ratio is much higher (~6.25 vs ~4.5:1) and as long as the rest of the motor is in good shape, it will give you a nice bump in power.
