I tried to pull start my H yesterday and while I was pulling it BLACK oily stuff sprayed out of the muffler and some in/on carb. I do have a flapper on mufler so I don't thing it is water. any help would be great.

They spit that black carbon/water mix almost every time ya start the old things.

Pretty much a normal occurance.

Don"t know what your dealing with, but just having a raincover on the muffler won"t necessarily keep the rain out of your engine. Your muffler attaches to a pipe nipple that is threaded into the manifold. Rain streams down the side of muffler and can run through the rotted threads of the manifold. Try pulling your spark plugs. Good Luck.

Some questions here...and I agree with the oithers about moisture...but why are you pull starting it? have you had the wires off of the plugs? If they aren't on right(firing order) and you pull to start you will blow oil out your breather tube, your muffler or any other opening and I am speaking from experience.

If it starts up OK I would not worry about the black oily stuff privide it goes away after tractor has run a few minutes. The rain caps are not very effective at keeping water out of exhaust (in my experience) a 5 gal bucket over exhaust is best way I have found.

Michael: I have been running old Farmalls for 60 years and have found that after one has been setting for a while and will not start with starter or crank, often a pull will spin it long enough and fast enough to clear things out and fire it up.

Allan says it's normal. Some amount is normal, but we don't know how much of this black stuff you're talking about... I've personally never experienced black oily spray, and between myself and my dad, we have seven 4-cylinder Farmall gassers. But, that's not saying a little bit of black stuff isn't normal for an "outdoors" tractor.

However, if you're talking about massive quantities of black oily spray, then there is a problem. You shouldn't get an oil shower every time you start the tractor.

I've got to say that if you're trying to pull start the tractor, something is wrong. The only reason to pull start a gasser is if the battery is dead, and then if it doesn't pop right off and run in a few feet, there is something wrong that needs to be fixed.

Those old Farmall gassers don't need much to start if the carb is clean and the ignition is in good shape and timed correctly. Unless, there are major internal engine problems.

If its parked out side what happens if rain runs down the side of the exhaust pipe and then leaks into the manifold. Then when you try to start it up it sprays all over the place. Very common problem with tractors

In the right (or wrong depending on how your crops are doing) weather conditions it can also be condensation. It has been a nasty, cold May here in Indiana and in these conditions an engine can "sweat" quite a bit if it is not started and warmed completely up.

ok I guess I left out a couple of inportant parts first it is nosed in under the shed and yes the battery is dead and the last time I pulled it 2 weeks ago went about 10 feet and busted right off and ran good and yes it was a oil bath .

Put your 7 tractors in field and run them 10 hours/day 6days/week for a while and I guaranty you will pull start one that was left out in heavy dew before long, that is if you are in hurry to get to work and do not have time to tinker.
